BurdaStyle Tulip Sequin Dress

I made this dress back in 2015 wanting to use sequin fabric for the first time to create an outfit to wear out in Las Vegas. However, even after a bit of alterations the top didn’t quite fit me the way I wanted it to. The sleeves were too far down on my shoulders and didn’t pull in the front or back enough, so it ended up a bit too gapey.

Description: A sweetheart neckline gives a feminine look to this structured dress. The tulip skirt is pleated for structure, so you get a sophisticated look.
Pattern: BurdaStyle Tulip Dress
Fabric: Sequin Bodice & Rayon Skirt

I made the skirt and front lining with rayon fabric which stopped it from being itchy from the sequins. As you can see the back didn’t quite fit me well enough and it was a little hard to get it to sit nicely.

I really liked the skirt part of this pattern though. It fit really well and was quite flattering. I think with a few more alterations to the shoulders this pattern could work really well with some stiffer fabrics, such as cotton sateen.

Overall it was fun to test out using sequins and something I would definitely try again. I hope to post a few more outfits to my new blog from when I was first learning to sew. It’s great to look back and see how far I’ve come and what types of projects helped me in my sewing journey.

I also love looking back at these to see how far I’ve come in my personal life too. I honestly feel so happy and proud of myself for where I am now.

Did you have any sewing projects that helped you in your sewing journey? I’d love to hear!

Happy Sewing!! Erin xx

  1. This is a pretty dress, but even on the model the shoulders are nearly falling off, and she looks like she has wide shoulders. A narrow shoulder adjustment should fix it. It looks good on you, so worth the trouble.
